Scottish Detainee Visitor’s Mission Statement


Core Aim:
To provide practical, social and emotional support to individuals being held in Dungavel Immigration Removal Centre as a way of alleviating feelings of isolation and stress.  

Specific Aims: 
     To improve detainees’ access to the world outside of detention
                                                             
To improve detainees’ sense of well-being (both physical and mental)
                                         To make detention more manageable for detainees
                             
   To increase detainees’ ability to change their own circumstances
                                                             
To raise public awareness about the circumstances of people held in detention

SDV’s Objectives:  To reach and support as many individuals in Dungavel as possible
                                    To provide friendly, non-judgemental support during twice-weekly visits to individuals being held in Dungavel Immigration Removal Centre       
                                   To provide phone cards, clothing and any other practical support to detainees where possible   
                                   To refer individuals on to other organisations in the sector or inform individuals where they can access additional support, where we cannot provide the appropriate services
                                  
To provide regular training and support for our Visitors       
                                   To facilitate a positive and enriching volunteer experience for all SDV members       
                                                                     
To collect and collate information about the details of the experience of detention as a way of feeding into anti-detention literature and to assist research and lobbying organisations.

SDV visitors compile a confidential report of each visit. This report allows us to monitor what we do and to produce statistics

The Coordinator works 18 hours per week and is based at the address below on Tuesdays and Fridays. The Coordinator can be contacted by email, phone or post at the addresses and phone number below.  If you phone the Coordinator outside of working hours please leave a voice mail. 

SDV visitors


SDV has around 30 active visitors at any one time. Visits are organised by rota and most visitors make between two and four visits to Dungavel per month. If you would like to become a visitor, please click on the "Get involved" link on the left of this page
